James Langley, fine and decorative painter, teacher, and design consultant says: “We are all affected by fashion and environment, although here in Savannah where generations of hand-me-downs, well worn buildings, antiques and early american furnishings are cherished, trends are measured against their ability to evoke a connection with the past. Satisfying design does not happen by whim or accident but rather is the hand of experience writing upon a clean slate. Good design is the product of sensibility steeped in artistic influences handed down over generations and can articulate that sense of personal connection between past and present, the near and far, between memory and desire. I sometimes think of art and design as a way to fashion the environment so as to subtly enable others to experience a strong feeling of personal integration as they move about their ordinary affairs. My tools are elemental; consider the elusive influence of color so often disregarded as negligible or merely formulaic. Color exercises an emotional alchemy in the brain and therefore successful design solutions appreciate color as a partner and an equal player in setting up sympathetic relationships with other elements in a composition. For instance it is important for the design to be freed from conventions that have become mute. Liberation from stale expression follows a painter’s discovery that the form does not necessitate the color but rather that color reveals the form."
