Working Drawings for the Stations of the Cross by James Langley (copyrigted material 2008). _______________________________ A simple line drawing refered to as "the cartoon" (from the Italian for "paper") to establish essential contour, compositional movement, balance and proportion is used as the basis and guide for the final painting. The complete exploration of form and color to communicate the full power and significance of the image is reserved for the act of painting. Cartoons may also provide an indication of the tonal structure and modeling of form (chiaroscuro).
